STATEMENT OF INTENT

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief?

My brief requires me to produce a lifestyle magazine for 16-25 year olds, In my research I found that 16-25 year olds want to travel so I will create a travel lifestyle magazine. The magazine must feature different social groups, as stated in the brief, but many of the travel magazines I have a studied have a focus on location rather than people. This is something that I wish to include in my own piece, highlighting the idea that it is the reader going to the places. To achieve this, I will use a minimal depiction of people and face them away from camera. This will encourage readers to see these people as avatars for their own experience and to have their own opinions rather than being controlled by the facial expressions they see in others. The covers will feature simple text, with a simple colour palette for each cover to convey this idea of easy travel, and therefore will not be too flashy which is similar to most of the covers I have looked at while researching, The contents pages will also stick to simplicity and I will not use many pages in the contents since I want the magazine to look and feel small to convey the idea that it’s lightweight and portable. Both covers and contents will stick to one style for their layout to feel more professional.

I understand that young people aren’t all interested in reading magazines so in my website I will include an introduction to sell the product to this audience, which will hopefully encourage them to read on. Like the magazine the website will be less formal and therefore more attractive to a younger audience. To create a sense of branding I will use the masthead on the website as well as for the covers. My website will include photos that weren’t used on the covers and contents and will feature a simple navigation bar that is easy to use. In my research I found that the website often follows a similar house style to the covers themselves so I will try to recreate the design in a similar way. These websites also include multiple links to different stories on the website so I will write a few stories to encourage readers to keep scrolling. The representations used on the websites will be the opposite to the covers, with them facing the camera since the website will be more focussed on getting people involved, and developing a relationship between reader and producers.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production?

Since my website will probably be where they see/hear of the magazine first I will put a subscription button to encourage the readers to check out the magazine. My contents pages will include social media ‘links’ as well as a website URL to encourage the reader to check out the website, there will also be competitions mentioned on the cover with ‘win’ written to attract them and then will tell them to visit the website to encourage people to travel between the website and the covers which increases the media convergence within my product.
